Issue #2: An IPO-heavy week, and what GMP won't tell you
Three mainboard IPOs opened, listing pops varied wildly, and the grey market got it wrong again — a primer on reading a new issue.
These sample issues are illustrative examples of the format, not real market reporting. Sensai is educational only — not investment advice.
Market Pulse
- Benchmarks were roughly flat for the week as attention shifted to the primary market, where three mainboard IPOs and a clutch of SME issues jostled for attention.
- Global cues were mixed; US indices were steady, and the rupee was quiet.
- Secondary-market volumes thinned as some liquidity was parked in IPO applications.
The Big Move
What happened: a heavily hyped consumer IPO listed with a modest pop, while a less-talked-about industrials issue quietly listed higher. The grey-market premium had implied nearly the opposite ranking.
Why it matters: the grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated number that reflects short-term sentiment, not value — and it is wrong often enough that treating it as a signal is a good way to get burned. The listing-day move is driven by demand and sentiment on the day; the business underneath is what decides the next three years.
Results Radar
Results season is only just warming up, but an early-reporting mid-cap beat on revenue and missed on margin — a useful reminder that "beat" and "miss" depend entirely on which line you look at.
Sector Watch
New-age and consumer names drew the IPO spotlight, while defensives were quiet. Rotation into freshly-listed stocks is common right after a big listing and often fades — worth watching, not chasing.
IPO & Listings
Before applying to any IPO, the sane checklist is on our IPO Center: read the DRHP, check whether it's a fresh issue or an offer-for-sale, compare the valuation to listed peers, and ignore the GMP. Oversubscription also means you may not get an allotment at all.
Lightning Round
- FIIs were mild net sellers in the secondary market during the IPO rush.
- A large-cap announced a bonus issue; remember, a bonus changes the share count, not the value of your holding.
- Gold firmed slightly on global risk sentiment.
One Idea
Pick one recently-listed company and read the "objects of the issue" section of its DRHP — where the money is actually going. It's the single most clarifying page in any prospectus, and pure research practice, not a recommendation.
