A visible change of hands
A bullish engulfing is a green candle whose body fully swallows the prior red one — buyers seized control in a single session. Bearish engulfing is the reverse. A 'morning star' (down candle, small indecision candle, strong up candle) marks a three-session bottom; the 'evening star' marks a top.
These are stronger than single candles because they show a completed shift, but they still need context and, ideally, volume. Candlesticks improve your read of who's winning — they don't replace trend, level and risk.
Engulfings and stars
Two or three candles tell a clearer story than one. A bullish engulfing is a green candle whose body fully swallows the prior red one — buyers seized control in a session; the bearish version is the mirror. A morning star (down candle, small indecision candle, strong up candle) marks a three-session bottom; the evening star marks a top.
Confirmation still matters
These beat single candles because they show a completed shift of control — but they're strongest at a level, in the direction that reverses a trend, and with volume behind the decisive candle. In isolation, mid-range, they're closer to folklore. Use them to time an entry around a thesis you already have, not as the thesis itself.
